How to Prevent Gum DiseaseFebruary 28, 2022 8:26 am
Did you know that gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults? It’s true – while cavities and tooth decay can certainly cause major issues and lead to tooth loss, gum disease may be the most serious challenge of all. To reduce your risk of developing gum disease, follow these tips:
Maintain Good Oral Hygiene at Home
The best way to prevent gum disease is to keep up with an excellent oral hygiene routine at home. Brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time and flossing every day will limit the harmful effects of oral bacteria. Be sure you’re not brushing too vigorously or using a brush with hard bristles as these can actually irritate your gums!
Consume a Balanced Diet
A healthy diet is a close runner-up to your oral hygiene routine when it comes to gum disease prevention. Limiting your sugar intake means limiting the fuel oral bacteria use to produce gum-irritating substances.
Keep Up with Regular Visits to Our Office
When it comes to gum disease, the best defense is a good offense. In addition to a balanced diet and good hygiene at home, keep up with regular visits to our office. This will allow our team to spot any potential problems early on and treat them before they develop into gum disease.
Know the Warning Signs
Educate yourself to be able to recognize the warning signs of gum disease. If you notice that your gums are inflamed, tender, red, swollen, or bleed easily, you may be developing gingivitis. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and is often treatable and reversible if detected early enough.
